NES Games


Overview

Date Range: 1983 - 1994

The NES games had a much longer production run that the similar equipped 8-bit game consoles with the exception of the Atari 2600. There are several reasons for this long run including:

  • Several thousand games were produced
  • There were few competitors to compete against the NES
  • Nintendo had several popular franchise lines like Mario Bros. that showed off the console's power and the depth of its games.

Game Title: Wizardry II: The Knight of Diamonds
Game Type: Adventure
Game Generation: 3

Game Description: The sequel to the original Wizardry follows the defeat of the evil Werdna and the return of Mad Overlord Trebor's amulet. After your success in the last adventure, you and your team were inducted into Trebor's personal honor guard.
Unfortunately, the peace was not long lasting. There was another evil fella living in Llylgamyn named Davalpus. Llygamyn stormed the castle, slaughtered the royal family and declared himself supreme dictator for life.

Since the staff's power protects the land from invasion by hostile outlanders, you must venture forth into the temple and get it back along with Gnilda's blessing. In order to hold the staff one of your party members must retrieve all five pieces of the legendary armour and become the Knight of Diamonds.

Wizardry II uses the same basic engine and graphics as the previous game. Players have the option of transferring characters from the previous Wizardry, or generating new characters from scratch.


Game Title: Wizardry III: Legacy of Llylgamyn
Game Type: Adventure

Game Description: A generation has passed since your band of adventurers reclaimed the Staff of Gnilda and the armor of the Knight of Diamonds. And once again. peace has settle over the land. And, once again, peace is being disrupted. The elements are attacking the land of Llylgamyn as earthquakes and tidal waves ravage the land.


Game Title: Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord
Game Type: Adventure
Game Generation: 3

Game Description: This game takes place in the domain of Trebor. Trebor was a power hungry ruler that went nuts after he acquired a magical amulet of immense power. It was later stolen by Werdna.

Werdna, unaware of the amulet's true power, brought forth an earthquake that somehow resulted in a ten-level being created. Werdna declares this new dungeon to be his new seat of power and a lair for his monster hordes.

Trebor, not to be outdone, declares the labyrinth to be a new proving ground where adventurers must prove themselves for membership in his elite honour guard.


Game Title: Wrath of the Black Manta
Game Type: Action
Game Generation: 3

Game Description: New York City is overrun with crime and many children have mysteriously disappeared.

Your mission is to rescue the children and defeat whomever is behind the crime wave. Use your ninja skills to protect yourself while looking for additional powers including teleportation and invincibility to help you stay alive and complete your mission.


Game Title: Wrecking Crew
Game Type: Action
Game Generation: 3

Game Description: You assist Mario and Luigi in their demolition business. After each wall in the building is destroyed, you move on to the next building.

Demolition is a difficult business. Be careful not to be trapped by a dead end. Unfortunately, despite your job being dangerous enough, there are dangerous creatures and construction foreman out to get you. It appears that Mario and Luigi did not get the proper demolition permits before starting.


Game Title: Xenophobe
Game Type: Action
Game Generation: 3

Game Description: After a distress call was received from a space station orbiting your home world, then complete silence. However, a single ship managed to leave the planet. The pilot tells a tale of pods that hatch into acid-spitting Xenos.

A small band of engineers were dispatched to combat the Xeno threat before it takes over all the space stations and, eventually, your home world. Assemble your band of engineers and fight the Xenos on each station, striving to either clear it or abandon it.

You start out with a standard issue laser but can use any weapon that you can find. Keep an eye open for Phasers, Lightning Rifles, Poofer guns, and bombs.


Game Title: Xevious
Game Type: Action
Game Generation: 3

Game Description: Xevious was a scrolling first-person shooter, and while a common game form today, was a new style of game play in 1982. Coupled with the graphics and game play, Xevious became very popular in arcades and was soon ported to all the popular game consoles and home computers of the time.


Game Title: Yoshi
Game Type: Action
Game Generation: 3

Game Description: Help Mario cope with falling Goombas, Bloopers, Boo Buddies and Piranha Plants. Your job is to catch these items as they fall.

Stack two of a kind and they both disappear or capture a whole bunch between two eggshell halves.


Game Title: Yoshi's Cookie
Game Type: Action
Game Generation: 3

Game Description: Yoshi's Cookie is a fast-paced puzzle game. Move the randomly placed cookies into rows and columns of cookies with similar patterns. When a row or column of the same cookies form a line, the line will disappear.

The Yoshi cookie is very special in both the 1-player and the 2-player game. Since the Yoshi Cookie is the key to both games, you must use it wisely.


Game Title: Ys
Game Type: Actio-Adventure
Game Generation: 3

Game Description: One day you encounter a fortuneteller who sends you on a quest to find information about the six books of Ys, an ancient land. The books were stolen by the evil wizard Dark Fact

Your mission is to defeat the villain and to discover the secret of Ys!

You can inflict more damage if you run into them from the back of your enemies from the sides. A head to head collision could result in your death. You gain gold and experience points for defeating your foes.

Once you have gained enough experience, you level up and become stronger. You can buy and equip swords, armor, shields, and other accessories.


Game Title: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
Game Type: Action-Adventure
Game Generation: 3

Game Description: Link is now 16 and discovers a strange birthmark on his hand. He discovers that the mark is the key to unlock a secret room where Princess Zelda sleeps.

When Princess Zelda was little, she was told of the Triforce of power that was used to rule the kingdom of Hyrule. When a magician unsuccessfully tried to find out about the Triforce from Zelda, he put her into an eternal sleep.

He ordered all female children in the royal household to be named Zelda from this point on, so the tragedy would not be forgotten. In order to bring Princess Zelda back, Link must locate all the pieces of the Triforce that were hidden throughout the land.

As you can imagine, each piece is protected by powerful monsters and you will require strength, courage and wisdom to succeed.

The Adventure of Link features a battery backup so games can be saved without the need for passwords.
